Mission: Tigris Shakedown
Location: CMO's Office, USS Tigris
Timeline: 0730 - MD 6

Nikki hadn't been in her office but a few minutes when the terminal on her desk chimed, announcing an incoming video message from Starfleet Medical. “Seriously?” she mumbled as she poured herself a cup of coffee from the carafe on her credenza....a little gift left for her by Liam O'Reilly every morning. Carrying her cup over to her desk she sat down and took a sip of her coffee. “Play message,” she said and sat back in her chair. A few seconds later the image of Admiral Osin Reade, Assistant to the Starfleet Surgeon General appeared on Nikki's monitor. “Oh geez,” Nikki muttered, setting her cup on her desk and sitting up straight, even though the message wasn't live and the Admiral couldn't see her.

“Dr. Beckett...I hope this message finds you well,” said the Admiral. “I will get right to the point, Doctor. Starfleet Medical has been developing a new Emergency Field Trauma Specialist training program. An EFTS is a Corpsman, Nurse or Physician's Mate trained in emergency treatment of trauma victims of all known species in the field. The training is much more specific than the basic first aid taught to all non-medical Officers. Emergency Field Trauma Specialists are responsible for responding to medical emergencies on the ship as well as being part of every Away Team. Their responsibilities are to triage and provide Advanced Life Support treatments as appropriate, which may include starting of intravenous fluid lines, intubation of the victim, use of bio-scanners, dermal and osteo-regenerators and administering of various drugs; Stabilize victim with life or health threatening problems such as trauma, cardiac or other medical emergencies; Administer medications according to their standing orders; Operate Bio-Medical Telemetry equipment; Monitor and decipher human life vital signs of heart, respiration, blood pressure, pulse; Perform other direct medical actions such as carotid sinus massage, rotating tourniquets, cardioversion and apply rescue techniques and knowledge to effect the safety of persons stranded, marooned or endangered by unusual circumstances. We have implemented pilot programs on several starships and have found Emergency Field Trauma Specialists to be of great value. With teams of two strategically stationed throughout the ship during a shipwide emergency the mortality rate has been significantly lowered. It is the decision of the board that the USS Eclipse be the next starship to implement the EFTS program. I am sending you the required training material so that you can begin training your personnel and we will be sending you additional trained personnel should you require them until your staff completes the training program. I expect and look forward to regular reports on your progress, Dr. Beckett. I will be available for any questions you might have. Best of luck, Doctor. Admiral Reade out.” The screen went blank then the standard Starfleet emblem appeared.

Nikki exhaled, slowly as she leaned back in her chair. “Wow,” she muttered. “I!” Still staring at the monitor she yelled, “MAC!...WE HAVE WORK TO DO.”
